BSN AMINOx is available in 30 servings. At the time of writing, our best offer is £15.69. If we break this down by size (435g), this works out at £3.61 per 100g of powder. This is very cheap compared to other products, but during this review we will aim to identify whether this is cheap for a reason, or if you are getting a really good product at an ever better price.
Taste is important when it comes BCAAs, as you drink them during your workout, so you need to have a flavour that you like and enjoy. BSN AMINOx is available in 7 flavours. We will not write the full list, however we will discuss the two flavours we tried.
Firstly, we tried the Blue Raz flavour. We wanted to a like-for-like comparison with other blue raspberry flavours from other products and brands. It’s actually a very good flavour, as are most blue raspberry flavours. The flavour does not have the same twang as others, which, depending on your preferences, may be a benefit. It’s a subtle flavour with a bright colour that gets people wondering: “what the hell are they drinking?”.
Secondly, we tried the Watermelon flavour. This was a good flavour, and better if we compare it to MUTANT’S BCAA 9.7. The flavour is not overly sweet and is a very moreish flavour, which means it’s easy to drink during a workout.
Overall, we are happy with the flavours. If you like cola flavoured products, then you’ll be sorted here – they have 3 different cola flavours; lemon, cherry and classic!
BCAA powder can have a very dusty, light yet thick texture. It’s very rare that you will find a BCAA powder that does not mix well, as long as you follow the directions from the manufacturer.
We mixed 1 serving (14.5g) in 1l of water. After all, it is a drink that you should use during your workout, we wouldn’t recommend using it before or after. We would not recommend using any other liquid. It mixed well but was heavily diluted, so you could definitely squeeze one or two scoops in there. Shake heavily for around 10-15 seconds and allow it to settle.
Remember, the amount of liquid will change the taste – less liquid will mean it is slightly thicker with a stronger flavour, but more liquid will mean it is slightly thinner with a weaker flavour.
As BCAAs are intra-workout (during your workout), you should drink this slowly whilst working out. We found that 1-1.5l lasts around an hour and a half, obviously depending on how much you drink.
This is where it gets interesting. At their core, BCAAs will contain amino acids, but they main contain other ingredients and compounds that boost your energy a little more. BCAAs are considered essential because, unlike non-essential amino acids, your body cannot make them. Therefore, it is essential to get them from your diet. Contrary to most other amino acids, BCAAs are mostly broken down in the muscle, rather than in the liver. Because of this, they are thought to play a role in energy production during exercise. More importantly, your body can use them as building blocks for protein and muscle.
First off, we’ll explore the nutritional information. Per serving, we are getting a 2:1:1 BCAA ratio of Leucine (2g), Isoleucine (1g) and Valine (1g). This is only 4g per serving, which when compared to other products, is actually pretty low. As well as this, we also have 3.5g of Alanine (improving athletic performance and exercise capacity), 45mg of Arginine (nitric oxide production, helping the pump and the body to build protein) and 2.5g of Taurine (helping water retention and focus, again for the pump).
Secondly, we’ll look at the ingredients, which include a mixture of natural and artificial flavours, artificial colours and sweetener (sucralose). There is no evidence of anti-caking agent, which is used in a lot of other products, and is a definite benefit.
We would argue that this BCAA powder is not for long-term benefits, but definitely short-term. There is a lower BCAA blend in this product, when compared with others, however the other aminos in there such as Alanine and Arginine almost compare this to a pre-workout powder. We noticed a boost of energy during our session, and it would be good to add even more to a pre-workout you may already take. But, purely for BCAAs, there are better options available.
