There are lots of places to buy MusclePharm products, and most places will offer their own discounts. However, we are going to base it on the best offer we have at the time of writing, which is £21.99. If we break this down by the size (900g), this works out at £2.44 per 100g. This is just above average for a Whey Protein Isolate. If you compare this to a whey protein, it is much more expensive, but we throughout the review we will explore whether this is worth the money.
ON’s Impact Gold Standard Whey Isolate comes in five flavours: Chocolate Swirl, Banana Split, Vanilla Ice Cream, Cookies & Cream and Chocolate Peanut Butter. We are impressed with the flavour combinations, but surprised to see no strawberry flavour. However, we tried Cookies and Cream and Banana Split. Both very delicious flavours, and go very well with ice. Cookies and Cream is a very wholesome, sweet flavour, whereas Banana Split was very moreish and easy to drink. We are happy with the taste of this powder.
Whey Protein Isolate powder is usually thinner than a regular Whey Protein, due to the lower carbohydrates which usually bulks up a powder. We added 27g of powder (1 serving) to 300ml of milk, shook strongly for 10 seconds, and allowed it to settle for 30 seconds. We experienced no lumps or bumps in our shake. Milk does make it thicker, but in our opinion tastier, and will add to the element of slow digestion; you could get away with using around 400ml of water if you prefer. If you want the taste stronger, use less liquid (around 250ml), but be prepared for a thicker shake. For even better results, you could invest in a blender. We use the NutriBullet 900W blender. It absolutely torches any powder, even ice, and gives you an incredibly smooth shake.
Whey Protein Isolate generally has a higher concentration of protein than other forms of whey, such as concentrated whey protein. The manufacturing process removes excess fats and lactose from the powder – this powder provides you with one of the most pure forms of complete protein available.
First off, we’ll look at the protein content. Per 100g of powder, you are getting 82g of protein. This is a whopping amount, but it is to be expected from an Isolate Powder – this is why it’s more expensive! However, this is not quite as much as MyProtein’s Impact Whey Isolate, which packs 90g of protein per 100g of powder. It’s also not quite as much as Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard Whey Isolate. However, it is still a large amount, and there is a claim from MusclePharm of BCAAs (Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine) in the powder, but we can not locate the amounts per serving or per 100g. The protein is also micro-filtered on a low temperature, in order to protect the protein content.
Secondly, we’ll look at the carbohydrates. As mentioned, Whey Isolate is trimmed of the fat and carbohydrates often found in a regular Whey protein. Per 100g of powder, you are getting 860mg of carbs, of which 380mg is from sugar. This renders the protein virtually empty of carbohydrates, which is exactly what you want in an isolate protein powder.
Finally, we’ll look at fat. Per 100g of powder, you are getting 0.5g, and less than 330mg is saturated. This essentially means that there is no fat in the powder. It would be illegal for MusclePharm to claim that there is no fat, as there will always be traces and therefore this has to be accounted for. Nevertheless, this is still very impressive and is something to be shouted about.
Overall, this is an extremely lean whey protein isolate powder, with very little carbohydrates and virtually no fat. There is a claim for amino acids, which is good, but it is not listed on the nutritional information. Also, the protein content is high, but there are other powders out there with even more protein. However, it is a very tasty powder!
