Reflex Nutrition BCAA Intra Fusion review

Value

Reflex Nutrition BCAA Intra Fusion is available in 20 servings. At the time of writing, our best offer is £14.69. If we break this down by size (400g), this works out at £3.67 per 100g of powder. This is just below average for a BCAA powder. During this review, we will identify whether this a below average BCAA product, or if it’s a great product with a decent price tag.

Taste

Taste is important when it comes BCAAs, as you drink them during your workout, so you need to have a flavour that you like and enjoy. Reflex Nutrition BCAA Intra Fusion is available in just 2 flavours, and we tried both.

Firstly, we tried the Fruit Punch. This is a good flavour but it’s a lot sweeter than other Fruit Punch flavours we have tried, and it’s a much fuller, tangy flavour.

Secondly, we tried the Watermelon flavour. This is a very tasty flavour and very refreshing. It’s got that wholesome flavour that you want for a Watermelon product. For us, we’d find it hard to drink during a long workout, but if you love Watermelon and it’s flavour, this may be perfect for you.

Overall, we are very happy with the taste and flavours of the two we tried. However, we are left slightly disappointed that there are not a wider range of flavours. If you don’t like these two flavours, this product is rued out straight away, which could be a shame.

Mixability

BCAA powder can have a very dusty, light yet thick texture. It’s very rare that you will find a BCAA powder that does not mix well, as long as you follow the directions from the manufacturer.

We mixed a serving (roughly 20g) in 1l of water. After all, it is a drink that you should use during your workout, we wouldn’t recommend using it before or after. We would not recommend using any other liquid. It mixes really well and we had no issues with less liquid or more powder.

Remember, the amount of liquid will change the taste – less liquid will mean it is slightly thicker with a stronger flavour, but more liquid will mean it is slightly thinner with a weaker flavour.

As BCAAs are intra-workout (during your workout), you should drink this slowly whilst working out. We found that 1-1.5l lasts around an hour and a half, obviously depending on how much you drink.

Effectiveness

This is where it gets interesting. At their core, BCAAs will contain amino acids, but they main contain other ingredients and compounds that boost your energy a little more. BCAAs are considered essential because, unlike non-essential amino acids, your body cannot make them. Therefore, it is essential to get them from your diet. Contrary to most other amino acids, BCAAs are mostly broken down in the muscle, rather than in the liver. Because of this, they are thought to play a role in energy production during exercise. More importantly, your body can use them as building blocks for protein and muscle.

First off, we’ll explore the nutritional information. In terms of BCAAs, we have a 2:1:1 ratio of Leucine (5g), Isoleucine (2.5g) and Valine (2.5g). This seems big, but remember the serving size is 20g, which means that this is only 50% BCAAs, which isn’t great. However, the powder does also include an essential amino acid, including 2.5g of Glutamine.

Secondly, we’ll discuss additional ingredients. It does contain artificial flavours, colours and sweeteners, however 99% of the products we have reviewed do contain these. It also contains anti-caking agent, which has been linked to long-term health issues, but only when consumed in large amounts.

Finally, the macronutrients. Per serving, we are getting 72 calories, 4.8g of carbs, 0.5 fat and 13g of protein. This protein will also help with repairing and fuelling your muscles during your workout. This protein comes from sunflower lecithin, which derives from protein sources such as eggs, nuts etc.

This is a good amino powder, but there may be better options available for both BCAAs and other amino acids. However, it’s not massively expensive, so it’s up to you to decide how important BCAAs are to your training goals.
